Abstract


Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the recognition of dentists and dental hygienists about including denture into the coverage of the national health insurance.

Methods: A certain number of dental hospitals and clinics were selected from Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi province by stratified sampling in consideration of the total number of the dental institutions in each region. And then one, two questionnaires for a dentist, dental hygienists respectively were sent to each of the selected dental institutions. All collected survey data were processed using SPSS ver 12.0 for data analyses such as frequency analysis, Pearson chi-square test, independent t-test.

Results: The rates of the dentists, dental hygienists who approved of the inclusion of denture into the coverage of the health insurance respectively stood at 40.0%, 78.6%. In regard to a possible reasonable amount of copayment by the insured for denture as one of insured dental services, the largest group of the dentists considered it reasonable for the insured to pay 800 thousand won or more for both of partial denture(41.2%) and full denture(48.5%). And the greatest gro up of the dental hygienists deemed it reasonable for the insured to pay less than 500 to 600 thousand won each for partial denture(38.6%) and full denture(26.3%). As to suitable age for using denture as one of insured dental services, the dentists(37.0%) believed that elderly people should be able to benefit from the health insurance at the age of 70 and up in case of using denture, and the dental hygienists(44.5%) considered it advisable for them to do that at the age of 65 and up.

Conclusions: Far-reaching and profound research efforts should be directed in advance into the insertion of dental treatment into the coverage of the health insurance in order to step up the promotion of national health and the development of dental personnels and dentistry, and the coverage of the health insurance should be extended to dental medicine in a manner to satisfy both dental service providers and receivers.
